What makes a good portafilter basket? Or a bad one?
Not all espresso baskets are made the same. If the holes in your espresso basket are uneven due to poor manufacturing, water will rush toward the bigger holes, causing channeling and side extraction. That alone could make your coffee taste weak and bitter. A high-quality portafilter basket will help you get that even, clean extraction.
What does calibrated mean?
When making Decent baskets, bed depth and hole size are designed to give the right resistance across different sizes. Every basket is calibrated to work well with its intended dose.
How does Decent guarantee quality in every portafilter basket?
We confirm that every basket is perfect before we send it to you by analyzing the hole sizes with software that coffee/computer scientist John Weiss wrote for us.
What is the ideal hole size for portafilter baskets?
Decent portafilter baskets have a hole diameter that is adjusted across different basket sizes. Less coffee in the basket means less puck resistance. To address this issue, our smaller portafilter baskets feature slightly smaller holes than the larger baskets, allowing for a balanced pressure and flow rate.
What is a good tamper size for 58mm baskets?
We recommend using a tamper with a 58.35mm base, such as our Decent Tamper. A smaller, less close-fitting tamper can leave an untamped ring of coffee around the puck. We also don't recommend the larger 58.5mm tampers. A too-close fit can dislodge the puck when you lift the tamper.
Does the Decent portafilter basket fit my machine?
Decent baskets fit most 58mm portafilters. It works with machines from Breville, Sage, La Marzocco, Nuova Simonelli, Slayer, Synesso, Faema, La Cimbali, Rancilio. Breville machines work with sizes between 7g and 20g.
